- Follow these step-by-step instructions to learn the techniques that real miners use to find gold.
Start with the “practice bag” because it contains larger nuggets. When you’ve got the hang of it, test your skills with the “advanced prospector” bag. It contains smaller pieces of pyrite and will be an even greater challenge.
Once you’ve mastered these techniques you’ll be ready to pan for real gold in a stream near you!
Step 1: Pour some of the dirt from your gold mining bag into the pan
Step 2: Submerge the pan in water filling it up about half way, and tilt the pan slightly so that the dirt pools on the bottom of the pan near the lowest plastic ripper.
Tip: You’ll need to use a lot of water as you pan for gold, so find a big bucket or plastic tub and fill it ¾ of the way with water. Now you can re-use this water as you separate the nuggets from the sand.
Step 3: Shake the pan from side to side. Because the gold inside the pan is heavier than the sand, what you’re actually doing is sinking it to the very bottom of the pan.
Step 4: Now that you’ve sunk the gold to the bottom, you want to wash away the top layer of sand. To do this, move the pan forwards and backwards to create waves in the pan. Allow the waves to carry both the water and the top layer of sand out of the pan and into your bucket. You want the water to flow over the plastic ripples on the pan because they will help keep any gold from being washed away with the dirt.
Step 5: Whenever you feel it’s necessary, add more water to your pan and re-shake the pan to sink your gold again. Then keep washing away the lighter sand particles. Repeat this process until you can see the gold left in your pan.
Step 6: Finally, use the tool or your fingers to pick out the gold nuggets and then store them in your gold storage vial.
